5 roads in South America you need to visit. Some of the most iconic adventure biking destinations are in South America: the stark whiteness of the Salar de Uyuni salt flats and the breathtaking views in Tierra del Fuego. Here are just 5 roads/locations we recommend visiting: 1) Salar de Uyuni salt flats, Bolivia - The world's largest salt flat looks like something straight out of a planet, with the expansive cracked surface extending for miles in every direction. There is no road, but riding on this infinite white surface without any reference on the horizon is an unforgettable experience. Just make sure you get there in the dry season. 2) Rainbow Valley, Chile - Nestled in one of the driest places on earth, the Atacama desert, is a stark cluster of rocks amply called the Rainbow Valley. Made up of 250 minerals, this multicoloured formation features vibrant green, red, and light blue tones. You could easily be mistaken for having been transported to Mars. 3) Quebrada de las Conchas, Argentina - This stretch of Road 68 is also known as Quebrada de Cafayate and connects Cafayate to Salta and is a stunning area to visit. The red sandstone and rock formations layered in the mountainous landscape are reminiscent of the Grand Canyon and southwestern American landscapes. A ride through this landscape on this paved road is truly spectacular. 4) Carretera Pastoruri, Peru - This road offers one of the most unique experiences of seeing a variety of landscapes from mountainous landscapes, glaciers and deserts in just a single day of riding. The location is home to over 660 glaciers, multiple 6,000m+ mountains and several canyons waiting to be explored. 5) Ruta de la Muerte, Bolivia - Also known by its other name, “Death Road,” this road is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It earned its nickname due to long mountainous hairpin turns, a lack of guardrails and steep descents. If you’re seeking a challenge, then look no further than this 43-mile stretch of road.
